What is Title I?
Fourteen of the fifteen elementary schools in Craven County receive Title I funds each year to focus efforts on improving the academic achievement of disadvantaged students. Federal dollars are used to purchase materials and equipment, plan and implement high quality student centered programs, professional development, and to hire additional staff in order to enhance instruction and better meet the needs of all students. Each Title I school maintains a school-wide status which allows all students enrolled in the school to benefit from Title I teacher support, as needed.
The Title I program, both at the district and school level, plays a major role in parent support and family outreach efforts. Each of the fourteen elementary schools has a parenting center located in a central area that contains resources, many of which can be checked out by parents for use at home. Parent trainings and activities are also planned and offered at these schools throughout the year. Check out more information by clicking the button below. |
At Brinson Memorial, we have two Title I teachers to support your child in their literacy development. That teacher pulls students in small groups each day and works with research-based programs such as Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) or SPIRE (Specialized Program Individualizing Reading Excellence). Your child is selected to participate in Title I reading services based on their testing data and a recommendation from their classroom teacher.
Title I intervention is also a part of a larger, state-wide initiative known as MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Support). As a part of MTSS, each grade level has a 45-minute block of time during the school day that is set aside for intervention/enrichment suited to your child’s needs. Student data is analyzed to target specific areas for growth, students are grouped with other students with similar goals, and they are assigned to a teacher for specific instruction in that area. Title I teachers provide intensive intervention during this block of time. These groups are flexible; they change according to students’ ever-changing needs. Your child’s core instruction will still come from their classroom teacher, and they are the best source of information regarding your child’s progress. Our goal is to provide your child with the best research-based strategies to grow them into a strong, thoughtful, confident reader. We look forward to working with them and seeing them shine! |
